Being the DONUT QUEEN that I am, I know I’m a little late on trying this spot but I finally did.
Birdies LA just opened in 2016 and serves intelligentsia coffee, free range fried chicken sandwiches and artisanal donuts made fresh every hour. I love that they use the finest and most local ingredients they can find because if you know me, I’m all about quality ingredients!
Before I get into the donuts and fried chicken I wanted to let you know about my experience here. I’ve been in the food service industry for 15+ years and I am a true believer in great customer service. This place literally blew my mind in how well they take care of their customers. So let me tell you what happened on National Donut Day, which was a couple of weeks ago. I’ve been wanting to try the donuts here and this was the perfect day to. I called all morning trying to place an order for pickup later that night, but no one answered. It was obviously busy because of National Donut Day but I still called multiple times in hoping someone would answer. Finally, at 4:00 pm someone answered! The woman I was talking to told me they were opened 24 hours from Friday to Saturday and to ensure I got to try all the flavors I wanted, I should probably place an order over the phone for pickup after I got off work. In order to place an order over the phone I had to order a minimum of $25.00 and I had to also pay in advance. I ended up ordering 7 donuts for pickup at 11:30 pm and paid over the phone. I could’t stop thinking about the donuts all night at work! I got off, drove down to DTLA, and saw that there was a long line wrapped around the building. I went to the front to ask if I had to stand in line if I already placed and paid for an order over the phone and guess what??? They didn’t have my order!!! I guess there was a miscommunication and no one knew about it. Of course I was disappointed and irritated. I mean, it was like a national holiday for a donut queen like me but, I took into consideration that they were probably super busy and accidents happen. The manager that night gave me 2 donuts on the house to try, refunded my money, and also told me to come back another day and get a dozen donuts and 2 fried chicken sandwiches on them. I couldn’t believe it! I would have settled for a refund and maybe a couple donuts on the house but all that was unexpected. They were super apologetic about everything and I could tell they were very sorry that this happened. I came back a few weeks later and even though the manager wasn’t there the employees honored everything he told me plus their $10.00 gold sprinkled donut. Great customer service isn’t always about free stuff but it’s how the situation was handled. I didn’t make a big scene, I didn’t get mad or yell, and I didn’t ask for any free stuff but they insisted. That’s how you know they care about their customers experience. They definitely turned my experience around and for that I will definitely come back!
Ok, so now that i’ve written a novel on how much I love their customer service, on to the good stuff.
I tried the original and spicy fried chicken sandwiches and both were BOMB! My fave was the spicy one, which was super spicy from the ghost pepper sauce and the tiny red peppers also gave it a very spicy kick!
My FAVE donuts were the strawberry white chocolate, dulce de leche, and maple bacon. They were moist, soft and fluffy! The flavors were super on point for each of these donuts.
Price Range: $3.50/donut & $10/sandwich
Tip: I went around 11:30 am on Friday and there was hardly a line.
Good For Kids: YES! They have yummy hot chocolate for kids to eat with their donut.
